JNU Moves to File FIR Over ‘Provocative’ Slogans Targeting PM, Shah on Campus
The letter written by the JNU administration to the Delhi Police states that certain students raised “highly objectionable, provocative and inflammatory” slogans and are in direct contempt of the Supreme Court
New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has requested the registration of an FIR following the alleged raising of “provocative” slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during an event held on the campus on Monday night, university officials said. In a letter to the Delhi Police, the JNU administration alleged that certain students shouted “highly objectionable, provocative and inflammatory” slogans, which it claimed amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court.
The letter, addressed to the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj (North) and accessed by PTI, stated that a programme titled “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba” was organised around 10 pm by students associated with the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU). According to the university’s Security Department, the event initially appeared to be a small gathering of about 30–35 students to mark the January 5, 2020 campus violence. However, the administration alleged that the nature of the programme changed after a court verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, following which some participants allegedly raised slogans deemed inflammatory and objectionable.
A video purportedly showing the incident has since surfaced online. The administration claimed that the slogans violated the JNU Code of Conduct and constituted contempt of the Supreme Court. The letter named several students, including current JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, stating that they were identified at the event. It further alleged that the slogans were “deliberate,” “repeated,” and had the potential to seriously disrupt public order, campus harmony and security.
Security personnel were present at the venue and closely monitored the situation, the letter said. The chief security officer has requested the police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Senior university officials, speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, said the administration held a meeting on Tuesday and would initiate corrective action against those found responsible.

Students, meanwhile, said the protest is held annually to condemn the violence that occurred on January 5, 2020, when masked assailants stormed the campus and attacked students in three hostels. The attackers allegedly used sticks, stones and iron rods, vandalising property and injuring at least 28 people, including then JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, as unrest gripped the campus for nearly two hours.
