In Sukma district, the bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered following an ongoing encounter in a forest area, while two Maoists were killed in a separate exchange of fire in Bijapur district.

Raipur: At least 14 Maoists were killed on Saturday in two separate encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar region, police said. In Sukma district, the bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered from an ongoing encounter in a forested area, while two Maoists were killed in a separate exchange of fire in Bijapur district. Both operations were still in progress at the time of reporting.

“Bodies of 14 Maoists have so far been recovered in two separate encounters in Sukma and Bijapur districts. The encounters are continuing at both locations, and further details will be available once the operations conclude,” Bastar Inspector General of Police P Sunderraj said.

The encounters followed search operations launched by security forces in the jungles of Sukma and Bijapur based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of armed Maoist cadres. Police said the Bijapur encounter began around 5 am, while firing started in the Sukma forests at about 8 am.

Security forces also recovered a large cache of sophisticated weapons from the encounter sites, including AK-47 rifles, INSAS rifles and self-loading rifles (SLRs). More details are awaited as the operations continue.
